Learning Maps

In High-Impact Instruction: A Framework for Great Teaching (2013), Jim Knight explains how Learning Maps highlight the knowledge, skills, and big ideas that students should learn during a lesson, unit, or course. Learning Maps offer students a visual or graphic organizer, similar to a concept map, to depict the Learning Intentions. They can help students conceptually organize, visualize, and anticipate Where am I going? and also provide teachers and students a vehicle to surface How am I doing? and Where to next? Therefore, Learning Maps provide students a concrete Learner Strategy to frame and organize their learning as they progress through the learning process. In the portfolio, the Learning Map may serve as an artifact to document what has been learned while also cataloging the learning strategies employed. They provide students a processing tool for learning, which Knight describes as a “living study guide.”
